A letter from our Artistic and Executive Directors

Dear Friend:

"For me, music is an invitation to the listener to become more fully present. If we can imagine a culture and society in which we each feel more deeply responsible for our own place in the world then we may be able to bring that culture and society into being."

---John Luther Adams

Third Angle New Music’s collaboration with John Luther Adams began in 1999 with a commissioned work, In a Treeless Place, Only Snow. We are pleased to announce that in 2019 we will host the NW premiere of his latest piece, Everything That Rises at OMSI’s Kendall Planetarium. This 360° explosion of color, sound, and sky features the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer’s own lighting design and promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. A work like this encourages us to explore new geographies both physical and emotional. JLA reminds us all about the impact music can have on our world.

Third Angle believes that powerful works can shift our thinking. We commission pieces that encourage fresh perspectives and a new awareness. In 2018 we premiered 15 new works as part of our tribute to local artist Elliott Smith with our friends from Hand2Mouth Theatre. We celebrated the voices of transgender women as part of PICA’s TBA Festival this September. We ferociously and unapologetically “played like a girl” with longtime collaborators Eve Beglarian and Luanne Warner Katz. 2018 also welcomed new artistic leadership and an all-female team headed by Artistic Director Sarah Tiedemann, Executive Director Lisa Volle, and Communications Coordinator Lou Watson. Third Angle was honored to team-up with our dear friends Cappella Romana to share office space and creative ideas in the nexus of arts and culture in downtown Portland.

As we look towards 2019, Third Angle will complete the launch of our new record label, 3A Records, with two album releases, partner with KBOO to produce a podcast series hosted by our artistic director, and continue to push boundaries with the creation of new work. Sarah’s vision for Third Angle is to progress beyond portraying our contemporary world and to actually begin shaping it. We are poised to take our musicianship and our social responsibilities as leaders in the arts community to the next level.

From creating a platform for underrepresented communities, to supporting today’s young composers by commissioning and premiering groundbreaking works, to joining the conversation about our ever-changing city’s present and future. As we write the next chapter, we reaffirm our commitment to listening wholeheartedly to new voices.
We hope you will join us with a year-end donation as we write the next chapter together.

With gratitude,

Sarah Tiedemann                                                           Lisa Volle
