Rose Okada, tabla
Multi-instrumentalist Rose Okada has been performing and teaching music since 1979. Her students consist of Suzuki Method violin, guitar and piano, North Indian Raga singing, tabla, Hindustani violin, and sarangi. Born in Detroit to a musical family she studied piano, violin and guitar. From a young age, Rose played violin in a family string quartet and in school and community orchestras for over twenty years. Her high school orchestra performed in eight countries in Europe plus she sang Soprano in performances at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center as a member of the Wayne State University Symphonic Choir with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Rose holds a performance Degree in classical guitar, performed in guitar and flute duos and participated in several auditioned guitar master classes with Manuel Lopez Ramos of the Segovia style. After graduating Rose began teaching music full time and began studies of Talent Education, known as the Suzuki Method with teacher trainer Shigetoshi Yamada. In the summer of 1986 she went to Matsumoto, Japan for private and group lessons (seven days a week!) with the founder of the Suzuki Method, Dr. Shinichi Suzuki.
In 1988 Rose relocated to Portland and began North Indian Raga singing, tabla and violin with Dr. L. Subramaniam and D.K. Datar. Beginning in 1994 Rose traveled ten times to India for music study and became a disciple of both Pandit Pran Nath (vocal) and Ustad Hafizullah Khan (sarangi). Hafizullah Khansahib was the son of the great vocalist, Ustad Abdul WahidKhan and Khalifa (hereditary head) of the Kirana Gharana. Ms Okada accompanied Pandit Pran Nath and Ustad Hafizullah Khan in raga singing classes and performances in Portland, San Francisco, The MELA Foundation in New York, Delhi University, Bremen and Paris on sarangi, voice and tambura. Also, in 1994 and 1995 Rose commuted to Seattle once a week to join tabla classes with Ustad Zakir Hussain and studied tabla with Hom Nath Upadhyaya of Nepal. Rose has accompanied many other vocalists on the sarangi including: Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan, Terry Riley, La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela. She has also performed sarangi accompaniment for Bharata Natyam Dance, Kathak dance, and tabla solo sarangi lehara accompaniment for Pandit Samir Chatterjee, Bashir Khan of Pakistan and Hom Nath Upadhyaya from Nepal.
