Join our percussionist Chris Whyte and visual artist Taravat Talepasand for a Listening Lab at Portland State University. They will unpack their collaboration Woman - Life - Freedom: Defiance Through Art by Iranian Women which explores the ways Iranian women courageously express themselves in defiance of Iran’s oppressive Islamic Penal Code.

Taravat Talepasand / Visual Artist
Taravat Talepasand is an artist, activist, and educator whose labor-intensive interdisciplinary painting practice questions normative cultural behaviors within contemporary power imbalances. As an Iranian-American woman, Talepasand explores the cultural taboos that reflect on gender apartheid and political authority as her approach to subversive joy.
Taravat exhibited nationally and internationally and is in the permanent collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, de Young Museum, Tufts University, Yerba Buena Center of the Arts, and the Orange County Museum of Art. Talepasand previously held the title of the chair of the painting department at San Francisco Art Institute. She is an assistant professor in art practice at Portland State University.

Called “hypnotic, enthralling…dynamic” (Oregon ArtsWatch), with playing described as “a striking diversity of styles and spirit” (Boston Musical Intelligencer), Christopher Whyte (b. 1983) is known for his wide-ranging artistry as a percussionist, timpanist, collaborator, composer, and educator. Public Transportation: Lincoln Hall is located adjacent to multiple stops on the NS/A/B streetcar lines and 1 block from the Yellow/Green MAX line stop at 6th & Montgomery.
Accessibility: Wheelchair entry into the building can only be made via the northeast side of the building. Wheelchairs enter on SW Broadway using the sidewalk and follow the pathway to all three elevators nearby.
Parking: Please plan for extra time to find and pay for parking. There are parking structures at 1724 SW Broadway and 1872 SW 6th Ave in addition to metered on-street parking.
