Third Angle New Music is a modular ensemble and presenting organization that creates sonic experiences for adventurous listeners in and around Portland, OR. Our work challenges and expands what “new music”is and can be.
Our performances incorporate contemporary classical, popular, and experimental/avant-garde music, often intersecting with elements of visual art, dance, film and literature. We perform in airplane hangers, skate bowls, active farms, downtown offices and other unexpected places, deliberately pairing place and sound in site-specific presentations. We commission new works from local, national and international composers that range from young students to Pulitzer Prize winners.
Third Angle’s bold programming, multi-disciplinary collaborations, site-specific concerts, and tireless efforts to bring new music to a diverse audience have earned it abundant critical acclaim.
Third Angle’s Season 41 blurs the lines between dark and light; humanity and technology; piety and blasphemy – find out more.

History of Third Angle New Music
Founded in 1985 under the name of Virtuosi Della Rosa, Third Angle was a group of freelance teachers, college professors and orchestral musicians who banded together with the common mission to perform “twentieth-century chamber music, with special attention to works by women, Northwest and minority composers.” Over the last forty years, Third Angle has created and presented more than 200 events, commissioned more than 90 new works, and released 16 recordings to critical acclaim. Most recently, Third Angle released the first complete recording of 1000 Airplanes on the Roof by Philip Glass and David Henry Hwang to international acclaim.
