Soundscape for Hagg Lake by Katherine Paul

“Hagg Lake holds a stillness that speaks in subtle ways, the rustle of leaves, the ripple of water, the hush between bird calls. I wanted to wrap those sounds around my guitar like a thread through fabric, weaving a sonic offering to the land and the people who honor it.”
— Katherine Paul (aka Black Belt Eagle Scout)

  • Note by the composer, Katherine Paul (aka Black Belt Eagle Scout):

This soundscape is an exploration of Henry Hagg Lake in Oregon, composed as a continuous piece that unfolds in sections. The music draws inspiration from the lake’s environment, capturing its rhythms and textures. The piece is meant to be played anywhere around the lake—whether by the creek, along the trail, or near the water’s edge. It can be experienced in its entirety or listened to in parts, with each section offering a distinct atmosphere to guide the listener through different aspects of the landscape.

    Water (0:00)

The section begins with the sound of lake waves, accompanied by soft guitar and vocals. The gentle movement and fluidity reflect the quiet dance of water across the surface.

Long Grass in the Meadow (10:00)

A delicate guitar line evokes the swaying of long grass. Subtle vocals bring a soft, melodic presence, reflecting the calm and openness of the meadow.

    Branches in the Wind (15:00)

Birdsong leads into an electrified guitar, expressing the strength and motion of branches swaying in the wind. The section intensifies, mirroring the powerful movement of trees in a strong breeze.

    Creek (26:00)

Captured sounds from Scoggins Creek blend with guitar, evoking the rootedness of the cedar trees along the water. A brief Mellotron flute adds a light, melodic touch to the closing moments.

    Trail Walks (32:00)

This section is open and curious, encouraging an exploratory, reflective pace. The sound mirrors the experience of walking, gently guiding the listener through the landscape.

The Vastness of It All (36:00)

The final section builds in intensity, with electric violin, synth, and guitar creating a bold, expansive sound. It captures the immense scale of the lake and the power of the natural forces that shape it.
