Third Angle to present eerie electroacoustic music within Zidell Yards warehouse
PORTLAND, Ore.— On October 9, Third Angle New Music plays with ghosts in Haunted Haas: an evening of chilling electroacoustic music within Zidell Yards’ massive South Waterfront warehouse. Pianist Maria Garcia, soprano Arwen Myers, and the Third Angle String Quartet take on music from local and internationally-renowned composers of the macabre. Doors open at 7:00p.m., and the show begins at 7:30p.m. The program runs approximately 70 minutes with no intermission, and American Sign Language interpretation will be provided.
“I've been waiting for the perfect moment to program Haas' Ein Schattenspiel,” says Artistic Director Sarah Tiedemann. “Paired with Nicole Lizée's otherworldly string quartets and an enormous, deconstructed industrial space...that perfect moment has arrived! Arwen Myers’ ethereal voice and excerpts from our Witch’s Castle soundwalk by Bora Yoon will separate the evening into a series of vignettes guaranteed to usher in the spooky season with just the right eerie vibe.”
In Georg Friedrich Haas’ Ein Schattenspiel, pianist Maria Garcia is chased by her own shadow. As she performs, the music is recorded, accelerated slightly, and played back— creating a surreal and unsettling duet. Myers provides respite with three unaccompanied songs for the Hallowe’en season by local composer Rosśa Crean and a requiem for Kurt Vonnegut by Christopher Cerrone. 3A cellist Valdine Mishkin performs Mirror, Mirror by Kennedy Taylor Dixon, and the 3A String Quartet rounds out the evening with two cinephile works by Nicole Lizée: Another Living Soul, a “stop motion animation for string quartet;” and Darkness Is Not Well Lit, a sonic imagining of film noir from the vantage point of an electric fan.
“In addition to being somewhat creepy at night, Zidell Yards is a wonderfully unique acoustic space,” shares Interim Executive Director William Pyle. “Its history as a center for deconstruction and reworking old material into new makes it the perfect backdrop for this program.”
Haunted Haas begins Third Angle New Music’s SEASON 41, which explores spaces between darkness and light, humanity and technology, piety and blasphemy. SEASON 41 includes collaborations with the Winter Light Festival, Zidell Yards, and Hillsboro’s Bag&Baggage Productions to create mind-bending sonic experiences that continue to define the future of “new music” in Oregon.
